Buying a mattress or bed is not easy... UNLESS you know what to look out for. In this section are a few more things you need to know... and some of the nonsense you really need to know...!

You do not have much of a choice!
In fact I do have a very good choice. I only sell about 20 models and these come from about 8 different independants each specialising in that particular model. I do not sell their entire catalogue - I only want to sell their very best.

The practice of offering hundreds of models with the same internal components is annoyingly pointless and confusing for the customer. My method just offers the absolute best of the bunch at the lowest prices.

For example, I could quite easily offer hundreds of mattresses under £200 from many manufacturers leaving you to decide (gamble) which is the best one. I don't work like this. I know my stuff and have personally selected the best ones within certain price ranges and it is these that are only offered on this site.

My descriptions are honest and factual, based on my comparisons and not from the spec sheet supplied by the manufacturers.

WELL KNOWN BRANDS
Sealy, Silentnight, Pocket Spring Bed Company, Rest Assured, and Layezee Beds.

Very good brands, years of experience in the manufacture of mattresses. Plenty of outlets selling these products with vast advertising material telling you how good and beneficial these mattresses are. But, what are you paying for?

Firstly, not many people know that ALL the above brands belong to one company - The Silentnight Group Ltd. Now. How many more mattress manufacturers can you mention?

Always Remember. There are well over a hundred UK mattress manufacturers out there. Some are very good, some are good and some are very bad. Most of these independant manufacturers, you will not have heard of.. but, it's highly likely a good proportion of them manufacture mattresses for ALL High Street names. The label is changed of course which means you never get to see who these craftsmen are - you only see the sellers name taking the credit.

Also, many (if not all) major manufacturers produce mattresses that are NOT FOR SALE ON/VIA THE INTERNET. These are supplied to shops only and the only plausable reaon for this, is that it prevents you from doing any kind of price or quality comparisons.

AND MORE ..

You do not have to be a genius to realise that all mattresses are constructed in pretty much the same way no matter whose name is on the label. And surely, there can only be so many combinations of materials inside ...
... so why do mattress prices differ so much?

Also, keep in mind, . Mattress manufacturers (in general) do not manufacture their own springs, or foam layers, or waddings, or fabrics and so on. These component parts are supplied from a number of specialist component manufacturers .. different grades .. and then assembled on site in their thousands.
HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST MATTRESS ?

Decide on your budget. The £200 mark (double) should get you away from most budget ranges and into the pocket spring models. £300 - £400 should get you an excellent mattress. £400-£500 should get you many manufacturers top of range models. There is absolutely no need whatsoever to pay over £500 for a mattress - no matter whose name is on the label!.

The rule of thumb is get the best 'components' your budget can buy. If £200 can get you a pocket sprung mattress - why settle for a cage sprung mattress for the same money? Or. if £25 extra can get you a memory foam comfort layer rather than polyester - It is well worth the difference. Read More on this ..

FABRIC TYPES

Always remember that the fabric on your mattress is relatively important to the price. There are three usual types of fabric that can cover your mattress. Stitchbond (extremely cheap) Woven Damask (Usual) or a micro quilt stretch jersey (usual on memory foam or latex mattresses) . Then there are many specialist fabrics such as Aloe Vera, Lavender scented, Organics, Climate Control, Naturals, Stress Free, etc

Bear in mind that on a Superking sized mattress it takes more than nine square yards of fabric to cover it in its entirety. If a fabric costs the manufacturer just £3 a yard then this equates to £27 that has to be added to the raw manufacturing cost. Many high end mattress fabrics cost between £5-7 per meter.
ABOUT SPRING TYPES

You may see that I mention only two types of spring system - Cage Sprung or Pocket Springs.

You may also be thinking then, where do Silentnight's Miracoil® or Sealy's posturepaedic® springs fit into all of this? Miracoil® is a trademarked name for use only by The Silentnight Group Ltd. However, a similar spring system is available from many spring manufacturers and as far as I know the patent does not belong to Silentnight.

To summarise: A pocket sprung unit is the best system - everyone worth their salt would agree to this. Springs that - Act like a pocket spring or, Works like a pocket spring is not the same as actually being a pocket spring. Read more about pocket springs..
