In Brief
No!

My descriptions are accurate regarding all the products I have on this site. I have tried and tested them all and I have compared them against others in the same price bracket from a number of manufacturers. . I then - Just like John West - select only the best, for comfort and more importantly, value for money

It is a well known and accepted statistic that most people (80%) try out a mattress in a shop for less than two minutes.. This is not long enough at all. This is also why I will collect and refund (in full) within two weeks if any of my matts are unsuitable for you. Two weeks is more than enough time to decide whether it is suitable. Would the shops do that?

And what are you trying it against? Usually it is against the mattress you already have at home - one that you are looking to replace because it is worn out. Sales staff know this and they also know that anything they show you will infinitely be better than the one you are looking to replace.

So do you need to try out the mattress?

When I select mattresses for this site I select them from a huge range of similar spec mattresses from different manufacturers. I then select the top two or three that I think outranks the rest based on price, quality and comfort.

My experience of 'trying out' mattresses is obviously far greater than yours. This is what I do for a living and it is the basis of my website. I have tried out the mattresses so you do not have to.

I know you will not find a better mattress for your money because it is only the best value for money mattresses that I put up for sale.

How much extra do shops charge?

The best way of buying a mattress is to ask the salesperson what you can get for £150. Then move up in £50 increments to see what 'extras' your £50 gets. This will give you an idea of what your proposed budget will get you.

But shops offer pressure mapping technology

What is pressure mapping?

It is a pressure mat you lie on, on a particular mattress and it shows the retailer via computer where your pressure points are. These are the parts of your body where you lie heaviest - usually hips, shoulders etc.

Using the mat on a selection of mattresses the retailer is then able to offer you the ones that show a reduced strain on your pressure points. Being the cynical sort I wonder if the mattress that is recommended to you when the computer says yes! is going to be really expensive?

I can't offer this service. What I can offer is my experience that tells me the better the mattress - the better it will be for you. It really all depends on your budget so get the best you can afford. You do not need a computer to tell you that.

Summary
No, you do not need to try out a mattress. You are obviously only going to buy the best you can afford so just what is the point? A cheaper mattress is cheaper for a reason. It will not have as good components as the more expensive model.

The internet shopping arena is a relative small place. It does not take very long to find out how much things cost - except when you come to price-check a mattress. Every conceivable practice is carried out to prevent you comparing one mattress against any other. Shameful practice. Read More here ..
